Your selfishness is hindering your happiness.
Adi Shankara (8th AD) teaches us that there is no freedom in this world without wisdom.
If you’re new around here, welcome to Wisdom Wednesdays - where I share wisdom from history’s greatest minds.
Lessons from Adi Shankara
Adi Shankara (8th AD) is a towering figure in Indian philosophy and the exponent of Advaita Vedanta, or non-dualism. His seminal work, Crest Jewel of Discrimination (Vivekachudamani), remains a crucial text for Advaita Vedanta.
Wisdom is the sword that cuts the veil of ignorance. Who is called wise? He who can discriminate between the real and the unreal.
Your selfishness is hindering your happiness. The ego is your enemy. It is like a thorn stuck in the throat of an eater.
Wisdom must be sought after daily. A man should be intelligent and learned, with great powers of comprehension, and able to overcome doubts by the exercise of his reasons. One who has these qualifications is fitted for knowledge of the Atman.
The road is narrow but the harvest is plenty for those who walk the path of enlightenment. The more a man satisfies his cravings in the objective world, the more his cravings will increase. But if he controls them and ceases to gratify them, the seeds of craving will be destroyed. Therefore, let him gain self-control.
The wheel of rebirth and death takes place in your mind. Happiness is only found in liberation. Man’s life of bondage to the world of birth and death has many causes. The root of them all is the ego, the first begotten child of ignorance.
When you have killed your attachments to worldliness, then you will find happiness. He is fully conscious but free from any craving. Such a man is said to be free even in this life.
Don’t mistake what is unimportant with what is important. Deluded by his ignorance, a man mistakes one thing for another. Lack of discernment will cause a man to think that a snake is a piece of rope.
Till next week,
Peace!
